Student Learning Objectives

​By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Recognize and describe the significant characteristics of quantitative and qualitative research paradigms.

  • Recognize and describe the distinctions between quantitative and qualitative research paradigms.

  • Appreciate the value of both paradigms by understanding that they contribute equally to the field of education.

  • Develop a research inquiry that is focused and purposeful based on a preliminary review of the literature on the topic.

  • Search and use the scientific literature to articulate a research problem of practice, research purpose, and research questions that will explore that research problem of practice.

  • Determine the most appropriate research design(s) and utilize research methodology that is most appropriate given the research inquiry, problem, purpose, and question(s).

  • Describe validity and reliability as that relates to the appropriate research methodology.

  • Recognize a broad range of data collection methods appropriate to each research methodology covered in class.

  • Utilize appropriate data collection methods as they relate to research methodology selected for research proposal.

  • Apply appropriate survey, measurement, interview and other data collection techniques.

  • Engage in a range of data analyses such as descriptive, inferential, ethnographic, narrative, etc. using the related software.
